ROOFING FAQ’S
Is your product Codemark Certified?
Our Owen’s Corning Asphalt Shingles are Codemark Certified.
Will I have a contract?
Yes. Once you have decided that you would like to proceed and a start date has been established, you will be asked to sign a contract of work and pay a deposit to cover material costs.
What is involved in the re-roofing process?
The re-roofing process consists of the following:
- Set up scaffolding/edge protection.
- Remove the old roof.
- Inspect roof structure for defects.
- Prepare roof surface (Roofing ply, drip edge, underlay) – (this is a good time to have insulation installed as it is often cheaper to install when the roof is being replaced, rather than at a later date).
- Product will arrive either on day one, or just before the project starts
- Install new product.
- Finish, Site clean-up and final inspection.
- Scaffolding is removed from site promptly.
- Once you are pleased with the finished result, we will send you your final invoice.
What inconveniences should I expect during the process and how do I prepare?
While we do our best to limit the inconvenience, getting a reroof is a major renovation. Here are some things to be prepared for and some actions you can take to help make the process go as smooth as possible for both yourself and the workers.
- Re-roofing is noisy. It is best to make prior arrangements if you have a home business or small children that might be affected by this.
- As much as possible, try to leave the driveway and yard clear. Scaffolders, workers and shingle delivery trucks will need to get as close to the house as possible.
- We may need to block access to garages during the process. If possible, try to arrange street or another form of parking during the day. This way we will not hinder you from going about your business.
- We take as much care as possible to protect your house, plants, and other items. However, if possible, remove any valuables from the exterior of your house (BBQ, potted plants etc, and put them in a safe place.
- Make sure there is a working power source on site, preferably on the exterior of the house. If you need to leave for the day and don’t have exterior power, please let us know and we will arrange to run an extension cord from inside the house. Also make sure power sources are turned on at your homes breaker box.
- Its best to let your neighbours know if you are having your house re-roofed. That way they are prepared for the likelihood of some inconvenience, especially if you have a shared driveway that we will need to use.
- Some debris will fall on the ground. We do our best to limit this, but it will happen. Please take care when entering and leaving your property. Our workers comply with strict safety regulations and want to keep you safe.
- Once the job is complete, the workers will do a thorough clean up. However, once the scaffold is down it may reveal some debris that we were not able to access. Simply give us a call and we will send someone to do a second clean.
If you have any concerns, inform your project manager and he will give guidance to the workers on site. Also, do not hesitate to talk to the one of the workers if you have any immediate queries.
Do I need to wash my roof and how often?
Roofing should be regularly washed with clean water to avoid a build-up of dirt, salts and other debris – particularly in those areas which get little rain on them. A dirty roof can lead to rust on steel flashings, and moss & lichen growth. Most manufacturers’ warranties require regular washing, particularly in areas that don’t get rain such as under the eaves.
You may need to wash the roof more often in coastal, geothermal or highly industrial areas to keep salt, sulphur and other deposits to a minimum. You can either do this yourself, or hire a professional roofing cleaner to do the job for you. Please consult a professional before applying any product to your roof, as it could be caustic and damage your shingles.
